Apparently our daughter is a champion procrastinator... we had a consult with a breech specialist last Monday, but when the doctor examined me, she'd already turned. At some point last weekend she must have flipped around. Hurrah! Thanks everyone for the advice and well-wishes. It looks like the home birth is still a go!
So now we play the waiting game. 12 days (not that I'm counting or anything...) until her estimated due date. Earlier would be just fine with me, though! *hint hint, baby girl*
In the meantime, I doodled this little portrait of our soon-to-be family... aren't we cute?
(This girl and her smug little cat is in the shop at Calobee Doodles!)
I didn't actually start selling until the 31st of March or so, but as of the 22nd I've officially been with Etsy for a year. And what a year it's been! I went from feeling like I'd probably never sell my work to making 1-2 sales per week. That may be small potatoes for most, but it's a huge accomplishment for me.
I also picked up "doodling," which was both an excellent business move AND a lot of fun! It's opened the doors to doing custom work, which I really enjoy, and it's more relaxed and low-key in comparison to my photography.
All in all, I give the last year's business adventures an "A." There have been bugs here and there, but ultimately, opening an Etsy shop has been a very fulfilling, rewarding experience.
And now for the best part: in honor of my Etsy-versary, I'm having another contest! Yay!
Here's the nitty gritty:
- The prize is one print of your choice from any of my shops, up to a $20 value. Two small prints would be acceptable as well, as long as they total no more than $20 (not including shipping).
- Leave a comment on this blog entry and tell me which print(s) you want to win.
- The contest ends March 31st at 11:59 p.m. I will draw the winners on April 1st and contact the winner by e-mail.
(Please note that comments are turned off at Vox and Livejournal, so you’ll need to comment at the blog.sixhours.net address to qualify, and don’t forget to leave your e-mail address so I can contact you if you win! This contest is open to U.S. and international readers alike!)
Good luck! :)

Stock--I has it! Yesterday I got this huge order of over 125 prints, so I spent the evening signing them and putting them into clear bags with my business card. I had quite a bit of help from Danielle, who not only helped me pack some of these up, but also cooked us a lovely dinner. Thank you, Danielle!
Very Exciting: I ran out of business cards while I was putting these together. This means I get to buy new business cards! Squee! (I can't be the only person who gets excited about new business cards, right?) I'm trying a new design for Sixhours Photography this time, and I also had a separate design printed for Calobee Doodles. The glossy finish was free, and I splurged for rounded corners. Now I can't wait for them to get here!

In the spirit of new beginnings, I decided that my first Etsy shop needed a makeover to better reflect its new content. So I doodled myself (it's not as dirty as it sounds, I swear!) and created a new banner/icon combination. For lack of a more inspired shop title, the new store is called Calobee Doodles. Go see!

I am so excited! Only one day after unveiling my new "custom doodles" listing I have two new orders. Two! I am so incredibly flattered and surprised, and I am having so much fun working on them. So much, in fact, that I've basically done nothing else all day, haha.
There is another custom doodle offer up in the shop!
The one other thing I did accomplish today was to buy a treadmill. Yay! I finally found a decent used one for sale, so T & I drove all over the bumpy back roads of Maine in a borrowed truck to go pick it up and bring it home. It's sitting in the middle of the living room looking very ominous... because now that I have it, I have to use it. Feh!
Now, if I rigged up something like this, I would walk a lot more...

I've had two requests for custom designs over the last week, so I decided to include a listing in my shop to that effect. For now, I'm only taking on one, maybe two orders at a time, so customers don't have to worry about a long delay.
T & I just got back from seeing Cloverfield, which was not worth even the cheaper matinee price. And thanks to the movie's wonky, hand-held film style, I have a headache and I'm nauseous. Blech!
For those of you who've asked (and, what the hell, for those of you who haven't), my birthday is on the 24th, which gives you all ample time to send cards, gifts, and money. Ahem!
(Kidding, kidding! In lieu of sending gifts, why don't you go enter my contest if you haven't already?)

I started working on this doodle with the idea that I'd have a cute Valentine's Day print to sell on Etsy (seasonal marketing, y'know), but now I'm pretty sure that it's not Valentines-friendly unless you want to give someone a "Sorry You're Alone and Broken-Hearted on Valentine's Day!" print. Ah well. She's listed in the shop, anyway!
This weekend was very productive. I wanted to get outside and enjoy the nice weather before the next big storm, so I grabbed my camera and a few props (the usual suspects - I'm obviously not over my creepy doll phase) and had at it. Tim gets brownie points for helping me engineer a few things... I'm so much better at thinking up ideas than bringing them to fruition, and that's where he comes in handy. My favorites are posted over at Flickr.
I also made lunches for the week (beef stew, yum) and watched a few more episodes of Lost and broke my blog and fixed my blog. I've decided that my next Big Project will be configuring a shopping cart system for Sixhours, so that I'm not entirely dependent on Etsy for sales. I've heard good things about WordPress' E-commerce plugin, but I didn't have much luck getting it to work with my current WordPress configuration, so we'll see. In the meantime, does anyone have suggestions as to a cheap/free shopping cart systems for personal Web sites?

There's turkey in the oven (with bacon on it! Yes, bacon. On the turkey. Because everything tastes better when wrapped in bacon, especially turkey.) and stuffing on the stove and I'm about to float away on the delicious fumes.
In honor of the fast-approaching holiday season, I designed a little desktop doodle for ya'll. You can download it here:
I'm writing from my parents' deathly slow Internet connection, so I'm going to keep this short and sweet. Besides, I hear there's turkey and bacon to be had soon.
Happy Thanksgiving, blogland!
In our old neighborhood, it was quite common to be woken up by the sounds of yelling and shouting, but usually the yells and shouts were death threats. Yeah, it was that kind of neighborhood.
Now we live in a college town, which means we're surrounded by intellectuals and intelligent minds, ambitious young men and women who love learning and seek to expand their horizons and open their minds...
... usually with drugs. Yay! With that in mind, I present to you -
Things one shouldn't have to wake up to early on a Saturday morning:
1. The sound of a drunken college kid belting out "Heyyyyyy guyyyyys!" in perfect show-tune singsong at ample volume.
My first reaction? Jazz hands, everyone! Vaudeville has finally come for me!
My second reaction? Death to the drunken frat boys on my lawn! DEATH!
2. Drunken college kid number 2, shouting at an equally loud volume, "I never thought I'd be walking around with you guys, WITHOUT PANTS, at 4 in the morning!"
Emphasis on the part about no pants. And hey, now I know what time it is.
Of course, I immediately went for a look-see, but alas, it was too dark. Which makes sense, because it was, ahem, four-o'clock in the morning. On a Saturday.
Did I mention the part about death?
I considered yelling at them from the balcony of our bedroom, but then I figured that a completely naked lady screaming at the half-naked drunken frat boys for disturbing the peace... let's just say, the irony didn't escape me.
Intellectuals and intelligent minds, indeed!
Anywho, the above doodle has absolutely nothing to do with pantsless, showtunes-lovin' drunk people. Thank the stars for that!
No, actually, three really cool things happened yesterday:
1) I won a contest at the ThisNext blog! If the prize is as cool as my Tovolo goodies are, I'm excited.
2) One of my photos made the front page at Etsy! Yay!
3) Finally, the cupcake girl doodle above was a runner-up in Hey Pretty Cupcake's artist collaboration contest! So keep an eye out for her there in the upcoming weeks.
So, Internets, it's been nearly a month! S'up with you?

I've decided that if I can't photograph an idea for the time being, I can at least make an attempt to doodle it, so this is a photo-idea-turned-doodle. Eventually I'd love to make it into a photograph, provided I can find an antique sewing machine that won't break the bank. That's one of the many things on my "random photography props" wish list, right up there with finding a beautiful abandoned home in the middle of the woods that a) won't cave in on me mid-shoot and b) doesn't mind if I trespass a bit.
My last photography professor insisted that we sketch our photo ideas out in a notebook before we attempted photographs, but there is no such thing as a "sketch" to a perfectionist. If I can't illustrate the concept in detail, I'd rather not bother. That's why I use a camera, after all!
The one thing I can draw to my satisfaction are cartoons. Realism evades me, but if you need a goofy, bug-eyed chicken with stick legs and a fat head, I'm there.
So here are these two girls who got a little carried away in their crafting one day, and you'd do well not to mention it, but yes, their heads might be a little fat. At least they're a far cry from chickens.
