(This girl and her smug little cat is in the shop at Calobee Doodles!)
I didn't actually start selling until the 31st of March or so, but as of the 22nd I've officially been with Etsy for a year. And what a year it's been! I went from feeling like I'd probably never sell my work to making 1-2 sales per week. That may be small potatoes for most, but it's a huge accomplishment for me.
I also picked up "doodling," which was both an excellent business move AND a lot of fun! It's opened the doors to doing custom work, which I really enjoy, and it's more relaxed and low-key in comparison to my photography.
All in all, I give the last year's business adventures an "A." There have been bugs here and there, but ultimately, opening an Etsy shop has been a very fulfilling, rewarding experience.
And now for the best part: in honor of my Etsy-versary, I'm having another contest! Yay!
Here's the nitty gritty:
- The prize is one print of your choice from any of my shops, up to a $20 value. Two small prints would be acceptable as well, as long as they total no more than $20 (not including shipping).
- Leave a comment on this blog entry and tell me which print(s) you want to win.
- The contest ends March 31st at 11:59 p.m. I will draw the winners on April 1st and contact the winner by e-mail.
(Please note that comments are turned off at Vox and Livejournal, so you’ll need to comment at the blog.sixhours.net address to qualify, and don’t forget to leave your e-mail address so I can contact you if you win! This contest is open to U.S. and international readers alike!)
Good luck! :)

I've been doing a bit of market research, and I think I may be changing my prices soon... raising them a little bit to be more in line with other artists with a similar level of skill. Most of the people I've talked to about this have told me I'm under-priced, but I can't tell if they're just being nice or if they're serious.
Pricing has always been a tricky point for me. I never intended to make a living at photography, so I've always priced my work closer to the hobbyist end of the scale. At the same time, I don't want to sell myself short. Confidence in my abilities plays a huge part... I have a tendency to underestimate my strengths, and I think my current prices reflect that.
So I'm turning to you, dear Internets. I put up a poll on my blog and I'd appreciate it if you'd take a couple minutes and answer it. It's a very informal survey, obviously, but I'm curious to know what my audience here thinks. You can get a good sense of my prices at my regular shop or my Etsy shop (I'm not including Calobee Doodles in this decision, because I'm still a novice in that area!)
You can also leave a comment if you feel like expounding on your answer.
Thank you!

Stock--I has it! Yesterday I got this huge order of over 125 prints, so I spent the evening signing them and putting them into clear bags with my business card. I had quite a bit of help from Danielle, who not only helped me pack some of these up, but also cooked us a lovely dinner. Thank you, Danielle!
Very Exciting: I ran out of business cards while I was putting these together. This means I get to buy new business cards! Squee! (I can't be the only person who gets excited about new business cards, right?) I'm trying a new design for Sixhours Photography this time, and I also had a separate design printed for Calobee Doodles. The glossy finish was free, and I splurged for rounded corners. Now I can't wait for them to get here!

That's right - after thinking about it, and whining about it, and groaning about all the work I'd have to do to make it work, I have a new Etsy shop:
http://sixhours.etsy.com is the new home of my photography prints.
http://calobee.etsy.com will continue to function as a shop for doodles/custom illustration.
This change makes sense for a few reasons. First and foremost, it's better branding for my shop name to match my Etsy username. I've known this all along, but didn't want to admit it, because of the amount of work involved in moving everything to a new shop (not to mention the loss of feedback and listing fees and--if I can be so lame as to admit it--hearts).
Second, now each shop has a singular, cohesive look and feel. Cutesy drawings + dark photography sharing the same space didn't sit well with me, as I feel my target audiences for each are somewhat different. This way one medium and style won't get lost in the other.
I hope this won't be too confusing to buyers (or to me!) but I think it's a change for the better. I have to give some credit to eighty8words for making the point that brand recognition is a good thing, no matter how bad the carpal tunnel aftermath. Yeow!

I decided to re-design Sixhours.net on a whim... I get bored with designs easily, what can I say? I also did away with the News section, as it was somewhat redundant alongside the blog. Any relevant Web site news will be posted here.
An announcement! You can now find my cupcake girl doodle on lots of different goodies at Hey Pretty Cupcake (also at the HPC Etsy shop). There are keychains, magnets, buttons--all sorts of toys and trinkets and things bearing the likeness of cupcake girl. I hope to have a few more designs up there soon, so stay tuned!
In an effort to stock up for the holidaze, I've also put a bunch of new prints up at my Etsy shop! I'm taking your advice, dear Internets, and adding some of my stranger works. It can't hurt. I've also taken your suggestions for note cards into account, and I think I know which designs I'm going to start with, so thanks for that! I'll probably launch those in mid-December... a bit late for the holiday crowd, but I think they'll sell well enough in the off-season, anyhow.
I'm feeling a bit blah about not having arranged my usual monthly photo shoot for November, but I put all that creative energy into whining about the cold weather (and I've been working on my shops, promotion, and things of that nature... it's not all moaning and groaning... just 75%). However, I'm getting the photo itch again, so I think I'll start getting things together for a shoot or two. Even if I can't get anyone scheduled until January, at least I'll have something on the calendar to look forward to.
I spent most of the weekend working on this: A digitally illustrated alphabet poster. I may not have leet illustration skills, but I can draw cartoons well enough (my specialty used to be cartoon chickens - fear the talent) and I thought it might be fun to do a version of the ABC's and print it as a poster. It may not be a work of Art with a capital A, but I think it's cute.
All this stems from the fact that I've been thinking I should try a creative pastime that doesn't involve so much waiting... one of the pitfalls of having somewhat elaborate and wacky photographic ideas is that they often require a good deal of preparation and planning before I see results, sometimes so much that I lose interest in the idea before I've had a chance to pick up the camera. Let no one accuse me of having a long attention span. Digital illustration is something I can play with in the in-between, thereby satisfying my need to create on a more flexible basis. I may even have to take a drawing class soon, and see if my hand-eye coordination is really as bad as I think!
I'm finally selling prints again, with the help of etsy.com. That place is like crack.
http://www.sixhours.net/prints has a sample gallery, or you can go straight to the source: http://calobee.etsy.com
If there's something you like that you don't see listed, or if you'd like something in a different size, feel free to send me an e-mail or a Vox private message and I'll see what I can do!
